Week 4
Lesson Content

Today, we’ll learn the right way to start, log in, and shut down a computer.

Part 1: Turning On the Computer

What Happens When You Turn It On

When you press the power button, your computer wakes up, and loads everything it needs to work.

Finding the Power Button

The power button usually has this symbol: ⏻

On Windows computers:

  • The power button may be on the front or side of the computer, or on the keyboard.

On MacBooks:

  • The power button is at the top-right corner of the keyboard.
  • On newer MacBooks, it is the Touch ID button.

Try this:

  1. Find the power button.
  2. Press it once.
  3. Wait as the screen lights up.
  4. The computer will load until you see the login screen.

Logging in means entering your name and password (if set) so the computer can show your files and settings.

  4. Once logged in, you’ll see the desktop screen — this is your computer’s home!

Part 3: Shutting Down the Computer

Why Shutting Down Properly Matters

When you’re done working, you need to let your computer rest properly.
You shouldn’t just close the lid or pull out the plug.

Think of your computer like a person — it needs to sleep properly after a long day.
If you don’t shut it down well, it can “wake up” confused, lose files, or work slower next time.

  2. Click the Power icon (⏻).
  3. Choose Shut Down.

How to Shut Down a MacBook

  2. Follow the steps to shut down.
  3. Wait until the screen turns completely black.

Part 4: Why Proper Shutdown Is Important

Here’s why shutting down properly matters:

  • It keeps your files safe.
